WHERE DID THE INDIAN WATERS LAUNCH GO?

Some of our regulars have asked what happened to our downriver launch, Indian Waters Canoe & Kayak Rentals.

The short answer is we still operate Indian Waters, under the Allegheny Outfitters name, but have sold the launch property and camp back to the original owners, who had it in their family for many years and always loved it.

We have incorporated all of the Indian Waters staff and equipment -- and most of the river trips -- into our Allegheny Outfitters operations. In other words, not much has changed, except that the former Indian Waters property is no longer one of our staging points.

That might seem like a small thing to some, but safe to say we thought long and hard about reconfiguring things because we know some of our customers get attached to starting or ending trips at particular locations. We can relate – we have some favorite runs along the Allegheny, too. And it is always reassuring to see a familiar place when you are out in nature.

But the reality is we’re a small, family-run operation and it didn’t make financial or logistical sense for us to keep operating our livery out of two locations, especially given rising fuel and other costs over the last few years.

As many of you know, last March we took our business year-round, opening an outdoor gear store and Wilderness Trip Planning Center in downtown Warren. We’re very proud to now have a place where our customers can get quality gear at a reasonable price and be helped by knowledgeable staffers who spend time in the outdoors. But we’re most proud of finally having a place where our Boy Scout groups, families, longtime buddies and other new or repeat groups -- can come sit down with our guides and maps and plan out their paddling and hiking adventures free of charge. We hope you’ll stop in if you haven’t already. Allegheny Outfitters Trip Planning Center is located at 430 Pennsylvania Ave West, Warren, PA.

If the Indian Waters launch has long been part of your Allegheny river experience, we appreciate you giving us a chance to suggest some other starting and ending locations. The National Wild & Scenic Allegheny has many places to explore!
