Every summer, hundreds of people travel to northwestern Pennsylvania to canoe and kayak the Allegheny River. It’s easy to understand why. The Allegheny is part of the nation’s Wild and Scenic Rivers System. It boasts several campgrounds, trails, historical sites and other points of interest, such as the Allegheny National Forest. Paddlers share the calm and scenic waterway with eagles, Great Blue Herons, snapping turtles, white tailed-deer and many other species. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day trip with your buddies or an overnighter to teach the kids camping skills, we’re here to help. Just be careful – you might get hooked. Some of our groups have been coming back for more than 20 years.

Our 2008 season opened April 1, but we are reservation only until May 22. Starting Memorial Day weekend (May 23), we are open Thursday through Monday. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on weekends and around holidays. If you want to take a trip on a day we're closed, or would like to explore a new part of the river, please check out our other livery, Allegheny Outfitters (AO) in the "Links" section. AO is open seven days a week.

National Geographic

In 2003, National Geographic Adventure named the Allegheny River one of America’s best fall getaways. The river is home to:

The Pennsylvania State Canoe and Kayak Championships

The Pennsylvania State Fishing Tournament

The U.S. Canoe Association National Championship Races (held on the Allegheny River every other year)

Indian Waters has been around since the early 1980s. Our family bought the business in 2006. We also own another livery upriver, called Allegheny Outfitters. Most of our trips are unguided, but we are paddlers and anglers ourselves and take pride in learning everything we can about the river so we can pass that knowledge on to you. We also strive to be good stewards of the Allegheny so its beauty can be enjoyed for generations to come.

PIPER and JOSH LINDELL, the owners of Indian Waters and Allegheny Outfitters, grew up in Warren County, where the Allegheny is located. Every summer, they spend hundreds of hours helping people plan and execute trips along the Allegheny River and its tributaries. They are also co-publishers of the Allegheny River Paddling Guide, a water resistant map and guidebook on the river.

TATABOLINE BRANT helps manage the two liveries. Before joining the family canoe business in 2007 (she and Piper are sisters), she was a news reporter and editor in Alaska for eight years. She’s worked for the Anchorage Daily News, Anchorage Press, Bristol Bay Times, Dutch Harbor Fisherman and has also contributed to Frommer’s travel guides. In 2007, she teamed up with her sister and brother-in-law to publish the Allegheny River Paddling Guide.

April 9, 2008 - We saw our first ever river otter this morning. For the last two years I've heard they are here, but never actually seen one - until now. We sat on the back porch and it swam right past us, we were extremely excited to say the least! You never know what you'll see!
